Gmail login Almost 5 million Gmail usernames and passwords were posted to a Russian bitcoin forum today, causing a whole bunch of email users around the world to say “I have to change my password…again?”
The cache, first reported on by Russian news site Cnews, has since been deleted from the forums, but the poster claimed that 60 percent of the passwords were valid. There is a silver lining in this particular cloud: 40 percent of the passwords are out of date or invalid. That could be good news for people who are concerned about their account’s security – if they’ve changed their password recently, there’s a chance that they’re not at risk at all. Hotmail sign
Google, for its part, has told The Next Web that it doesn’t believe that the usernames and passwords came from a security breach of its system. That means it’s likely the information came from phishing attacks and malware, which means people are more likely to have already changed their login information. Gmail login
Launching in 1996, Hotmail was one of the earliest – and most popular – email service providers around. By 1997, it was already popular enough to sell to MSN and become part of their suite of tools for over $400 million.
When Gmail was launched in 2004, it put a lot of pressure on both Hotmail and Yahoo since it had better features – and it was providing those features to users for free.
In the end, Hotmail just couldn’t compete, and despite an update to Windows Live Hotmail in 2005, it was ultimately doomed.
Microsoft launched Outlook in 2012, and all Hotmail users were allowed to upgrade to Outlook for free. At that point, they had the choice to either keep their original Hotmail address or get a new Outlook address.
It was a good move for Microsoft. To this day, they are Gmail’s biggest competitor.
Q: Is it safe to use Hotmail for my email needs?
A: Microsoft takes security seriously and implements various security measures to protect your Hotmail (Outlook.com) account. However, it's essential to follow good security practices, such as using a strong, unique password, enabling two-factor authentication, and being cautious about phishing attempts. Regularly updating your password is also a good security practice.
