English: The fortifications of the Hetionean peninsula in Piraeus date to the Early 5th cent. B.C. and Themistocles. They protected the commercial port of Piraeus from land raids. The Spartans demolished the walls after the end of the Peloponnesian War in the Late 5th cent. B.C. Conon rebuilt them once again in the Early 4th cent. B.C. The remains of the two round towers in the image were built in the 2nd cent. B.C. and protected the Hetioneian Gate. Sulla destroyed the fortifications in the Early 1st cent. B.C. They were never rebuilt again. From approximately 1400 meters of the wall measured in the 19th century, only 170 meters survive. Source: Information board opposite the towers.
