NPS/Patrick Myers It's inspiring to see large, wild mammals in the unexpected context of a park with desert dunes! Unlike deer, elk bulls keep their antlers through the winter, shedding them as spring begins. Elk mothers leave the herd in late spring to give birth to one or two calves. In early morning or evening, look for elk from the park entrance road. They are often seen this time of year, but when the park gets busier in spring, they move deeper into the grasslands. |
