Ըրլ Կրէյ թէյը թէյերու բառեխառնուրդ մըն է, որ համեմուած է աւելցուած Պերկամօթ իւղով:[1] Աւանդապէս, "Ըրլ Կրէյ"-ը կը շինուէր Սեւ Թէյէ, բայց թէյի արտադրիչ գործարանները սկսած են պատրաստել Ըրլ Կրէյը տարբեր թէյերով, ինչպէս կանաչ կամ Ուլոնկ թէյեր:[2]

Թէյեր համեմուած պերկամօթով, որ կը համարուէր աւելի սուղ թէյերու չինական տեսակներէն, ճանչցուած է Անգլիոյ մէջ 1820էն ի վեր: «Կրէյ» թէյը գիտցուած է 1850ական թուականներէն, բայց առաջին հրատարակուած ծանօթագրութիւնները Ըրլ Կրէյի Charlton & Co. գործարանի ծանոցումներուն մէջ յայտնուեցան, Լոնտոնի մէջ՝ 1880-ին:[3][4][5][6][7]
